Election results, new development on city council agenda

The development of The Trails at Tortosa has had a delay.

With a crowded agenda, the city council on Tuesday night is set to approve a canvass of the Primary Election results.

Listed on the consent agenda, meaning it could be voted on as part of a block of items that typically would not involve discussion, the canvass affirms the final count. That was particularly close in the council race, which had six candidates.

In a race for three seats, two were elected outright and two advanced to the General Election. The difference between qualifying for the General Election and not qualifying was 15 votes. Because of irregularity in some early-voting ballots, Councilwoman Julia Gusse questioned the final count.

After the city council approves the canvass, candidates have five days to challenge the results.

Also on Tuesday’s agenda are development projects that have been before the planning and zoning commission. Those include zoning map changes for a proposed apartment complex on Porter Road, the new Maricopa Station Overlay District and a residential/commercial area planned at the southeast corner of Porter and Bowlin roads.

The council may also grant a one-time, six-month extension to Communities Southwest Management for the final plats on The Trails at Tortosa, a planned residential development on the northwest corner of Honeycutt Road and Murphy Road. Though buyers are in place, the company saw negotiations stall with the COVID-19 pandemic as the deadline for the plats neared.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. in City Hall. There is limited access to the public due to COVID-19 protocols, but the meeting can be viewed on the City’s YouTube channel.
