Maricopa Historical Society Meeting

May 6, 2019 @ 4:30 pm

The Maricopa Historical Society would like to thank all those who attended our recent lecture series.  We feel the series was a great success with speakers that gave presentations that helped our community understand the legacy we have in the Maricopa area.  The Maricopa Historical Society will continue to meet the first Monday of every month to discuss activities and events in the Maricopa area involving historical interests.  The society will also continue to have rotating exhibits at the Maricopa Public Library in the display cabinets.

The Maricopa Historical Society’s new exhibit at the City of Maricopa Public Library displays artwork by a local artist named “Vada Smith.”  At our Historical Society’s meeting on Monday May 6 at 5:30 PM, Vada’s oldest son, Milton “Le” Smith, will discuss his family’s life in Arizona agriculture.  In 1943, his dad bought 5 sections (3,200 acres) of raw desert land 10 miles south of Maricopa and farmed mainly Cotton.

His mother was an accomplished artist who loved to travel.  Vada sketched and painted her experiences in pencil, watercolor, and acrylics.  Her paintings display everyday Arizona life, wildlife, ghost towns, mines, and historic landmarks.  Her paintings and murals grace the walls of farm homes in the area today and were displayed in numerous countries around the world.
