A farmers market returned to Maricopa Saturday with the city-sponsored 2nd Saturday Maricopa Market at Copper Sky Regional Park.

Dozens of Maricopa residents lined up to get first dibs on fresh produce, baked goods, gifts and more prior to the 8 a.m. opening.

The purpose of the market is to provide Maricopa residents access to fresh produce and organic products while supporting local businesses. In addition to shopping, attendees could participate in activities such as yoga in the park later in the day.

Produce on Wheels offered 60 pounds of produce for $10.

“We also have business leaders out there selling clothing, jewelry and baked goods,” Niesha Whitman, special events and marketing manager for the city of Maricopa, said at the event.

Whitman reached out to more local vendors in hopes of bringing in more customers and turning around the struggling event.

“The turnout was phenomenal,” Whitman said. “It was more than we had anticipated.”

The next market is Dec. 12 from 8 a.m. to noon.
