UPDATE: Ak-Chin fire station blaze under investigation

The cause of a fire Thursday evening at the old Ak-Chin Fire Department station near Farrell Road and State Route 347 is under investigation.

Maricopa Fire Department spokesman Jon Sheaffer said Thursday Maricopa units responded to the fire inside the building around 6:45 p.m. Several fire agencies responded to the blaze.

Bart Smith, community operations manager for the Ak-Chin Indian Community, said a vacant room on the north side of the building was “pretty much damaged.”

There were no reports of injuries, and no report of anyone  inside the building at the time of the fire, he said.

The building is not in use as a fire station, he said. The south side of the building houses the tribal enrollment and youth coordinator offices.
