Maricopa and Ak-Chin firefighters alongside members of Southwest Ambulance enjoyed food, games and fun Saturday as the community recognized the work of local first responders.

Maricopa Seniors, Inc., a nonprofit corporation that administers programs for the city’s oldest residents, organized Firefighter Appreciation Day, an event that took place at Jane Askew Park in the Rancho El Dorado neighborhood.

“The community really embraced this event,” said Therese Starkey, president of Maricopa Seniors. “It was definitely embraced by the community to show their appreciation.”

Starkey said this was the first appreciation day for firefighters ever held in the city. Activities during the three-hour event included face painting, laser tag, a photo booth and a tug-of-war competition among fire crews.

The nonprofit group received donations from various businesses that were used in a raffle for firefighters and their families.
“I was able to get enough donations to get every firefighter a prize,” Starkey said.
