Food prices up nearly 15.6% since January 2021

The cost of food has risen by 15.6% since January 2021, according to data released this week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In January 2021, the food price index was 270.93. As of , it was 313.14. That is an increase of more than 42 or 15.6%.

Year over year, from September 2021 to September 2022, food prices increased 11.2%, according to the Bureau of Labor Stsatistics.

The index for cereals and bakery products increased 16% over the year and the index for dairy and related products rose 15%, according to the data. The other major grocery-store food groups posted increases ranging from 9% (meats, poultry, fish, and eggs) to 15.7% (other food at home).
