A former Maricopa resident died in custody at the Pinal County Jail on Saturday.

Skyler Clem, 22, of Florence, was arrested Friday night by the Florence Police Department on two outstanding warrants for failure to appear related to DUI charges. According to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, Clem was booked at the jail at 7:14 p.m. and was screened by detention staff and healthcare workers. He denied having any health condition, ingesting drugs or alcohol or having other issues that would require medical attention, according to the report.

“He denied having any experience with the withdrawal affects from drugs and or alcohol and he understood he could request healthcare at any time while he was in jail,” PCSO spokesman Tim Gaffney stated.

Clem was described as cooperative throughout the arrest process. According to the report, he was put into a cell with other inmates and went to sleep.

Saturday morning, he was found unresponsive. He was taken to Anthem Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
