Former Pinal County Sheriff Roger Vanderpool was sworn in as the Director of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) Monday. “Roger was the best man for the job,” according to Governor Janet Napolitano. “I know he will lead the agency in a very strong direction and I feel confident that the new director will do an outstanding job for the State of Arizona.”

Vanderpool, who was re-elected to a second term as Sheriff in November, was appointed by Gov. Napolitano after a nationwide search was conducted. After a unanimous confirmation from the Arizona Senate, Vanderpool resigned his position as Sheriff on March 24 and accepted the position of DPS Director March 28.

“I’m honored to get the job,” Vanderpool stated. “I think I bring a whole new perspective to the director’s position. There has never been a Sheriff who’s been DPS director.”
