Four Maricopa drama students showcase their directing skills

Four students from Maricopa High School’s advanced acting class will direct one-act plays for friends, family and the community Friday and Saturday after months of preparation.

Seniors Jerry Allen, Alicia Redger and Brittany Rimer, and junior Desiree Comparetto prepared, practiced and perfected their one-act plays in hopes of a successful opening performance on Thursday.

All four of the students said they were extremely nervous for the opening night and were having a hard time cutting the strings from their actors.

“We are still waiting for the reward,” Rimer said on Wednesday.

The four students are the only members of Carrie Vargas’ advanced acting class and the directing project is 60 percent of their grade. The students chose the plays from a list of about 20.

Once they made a decision on the play, the student directors held auditions and chose their actors.

“We really did everything, Ms. Vargas did not choose anything for us,” Comparetto said.
The students have busied themselves with costumes, set design, props, and blocking for the past several weeks and saw their work Thursday night for the first time.

Despite admitting that they would all rather act in a play than direct it, the four students agreed that regardless of their grade, the most important thing to them was that their play turned out well.

Vargas said each of the four students learned what it means to be a director, adding that she no longer refers to them as student directors but solely as directors.

This is the first year that MHS has had an advanced, level-three acting class and Vargas said she feels this project is necessary to the students meeting the states requirements. In the future, she hopes the program will grow large enough to postpone the director project until the second year of the course.

Overall, Vargas said she is pleased with the students’ work and knows they have learned everything she hoped they would.
