inmaricopa.com continues a new feature with interviewing people around town who have an impact on the daily lives of Maricopa residents. Today we catch up with Kortney Smith, an intern with the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce. If you have a person in town you would like to see interviewed, email us at [email protected].

Smith went to Marana High School in Tucson and will be a sophomore at Central Arizona College in Casa Grande this fall. In high school she was involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society. Smith also played varsity softball all four years in high school. She continues her love of the sport at CAC. Smith grew up in Chandler and lived in Tucson for five years. She recently moved to Maricopa for the summer with her mom and step dad, who have been Maricopa residents for about five years.

inmaricopa.com: What interested you in being an intern with the Chamber?

Smith: Well, I had helped Terri (Kingery) out over Christmas break, and she was such a great person to work for that I knew it was the perfect summer job for me. Plus, I knew it would help me get more familiar with the town and people.

inmaricopa.com: As an intern, what are your responsibilities at the Chamber?

Smith: I pretty much do all the little things like update the Web page, mailings, finish up newsletters, make packets and hold down the office when Terri has a meeting.

inmaricopa.com: What do you enjoy most about your work with the Chamber?

Smith: I enjoy having such a good boss that helps me learn so many new things that I am sure to use later on in life.

inmaricopa.com: Describe a typical day for you in your intern role.

Smith: Well, to tell you the truth, no day is ever the same, but I would come in at 10 a.m. and pretty much always see Terri swamped with things. So I ask her what she needs me to do for the day, and she already has a list for me. I just get to work on the items on the list, and then I head home around 2 p.m.

inmaricopa.com: If you had to describe working in Maricopa in a few words, what would they be?

Smith: Close, friendly and never boring.

inmaricopa.com: What are your career goals?

Smith: Right now I am majoring in education. I want to become a high school math teacher and coach girls’ softball.
