Gila River, Tohono O’odham helping out Maricopa

2080

City council will be busy Tuesday night as the Gila River Indian Community and Tohono O’odham Nation will be stepping forward with grants to the city to help development, infrastructure and economic networking.

The Gila River and Tohono O’odham Nation will also be assisting with the grants for the Boys and Girls Club and for Eco, Inc. Both non-profits received partial awards for their programs from the city, but the awarded grant money did not cover either party’s request to sustain operations.

Karen Schaffer, human resources director, will formally begin the process of restructuring city hall personnel. As a result of one of the assistant to the city manager positions being vacated, it has been determined that the responsibilities and qualifications necessary to support the city manager can be utilized through an Administrative Assistant II position. This reclassification will result in an approximate annual salary savings of $27,988.00.

Schaffer will also formally be presenting the council with health packages for city employees that would include employee contributions and the various providers for medical, dental and life insurance.

The ongoing debate on the Quiet Zone will also be reviewed and up for action. Two new proposals show significant reductions in cost. Option A will be for $38,000 and Option B for $48,000. It appears study sessions with public involvement and topographical surveys have been removed from the previous contract of roughly $77,000 with the city using Union Pacific’s topographical survey information and including their previously recorded information within the study. Within the scope of work the following crossings will be evaluated: SR 347, Porter Road, Ralston Road, White and Parker Road and Hartman Road.

The council will also discuss and possibly adopt a tentative operating budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. Cynthia Sneed, financial services director, will be presenting operating budgets to the council members, as they move closer to the June 14 final budget adoption.
