Governing board to vote on sporting event passes, new bus routing software

Maricopa Unified School District’s governing board meets tonight at 6 p.m. in the high school lecture hall.

In addition to approving vouchers, donations, a travel request and a list of employment positions and stipends, board members may also go into executive session to discuss or consult with their attorney regarding litigation, specifically Maricopa County Case No. CV2009-004597.

Two additional executive sessions may be held for the consideration of district employee(s) applying for the position of interim superintendent, unless the employee wishes the discussion held in open meeting. The second executive session would involve legal consultation regarding contract negotiations for the same position.

The governing board will be presenting operating protocol for themselves, as well as operating principles between the board and the superintendent.

Transportation Director Fred Laguna and Business Services Director Aron Rausch will offer a transportation update now that schools have been in session for two weeks. Rausch will also be discussing the facilities usage agreement between the district and the city of Maricopa.

In order for faculty and parents to be able to support MHS sport teams and still save money, assistant principal Mike Larsen will propose two types of season passes to the board. The faculty pass, available to all district employees, would allow staff and their spouse to attend all home sporting events for the entire 2009-2010 school year for $15. Family passes ($50 per season) would allow five members of an immediate family to attend all home sporting events for either the fall, winter or spring seasons.

A bid for the purchase of white copy paper will come before the board. Utilizing the Greater Phoenix Purchasing Consortium to buy in bulk, the district can reduce the cost per ream of paper from $2.99 to $2.394, which is a total savings to the district of $5,006.40 per truckload (8,400 reams) of white copy paper. The cost to the district for one truckload will be $20,109.60 plus tax.

Laguna will also bring the board a request for transportation routing software. Information would be put into a district map with GPS coordinates, as well as route stops and students. The vendor would do initial training, but district staff at each school would also be trained to access the information, and parents would have online access to view routes. Total cost to the district would be $29,848 plus travel expenses for training.
