Lace up you cleats, break out the gloves and choose your side as Maricopa kicks off its Guns & Hoses Softball Tournament.

The co-ed competition, which takes place at Pacana Park on March 27, features eight teams composed of both private citizens and public safety personnel playing for the right to become the Guns and Hoses champion.

However, it the tournament is about much more than bragging rights.

Each participant will pay $20 to enter the tournament and that money will then be put aside to fund three public safety scholarships.

“These scholarships will go to high school students interested in a career in public safety,” said public safety director Patrick Melvin. “We are happy to help the community through this event.”

Previously, representatives from the police and fire departments played against each other in a Guns and Hoses basketball tourney; this year softball will be the sport that determines the champions.

Registration for the event is ongoing. To register or for more information, contact Shannon Hull 520-431-3824 or by e-mail at [email protected].
