Desert Star Gymnastics pulled off a virtual sweep of the level four competitions at the Grand Canyon State Games this past Saturday.

The competition was hosted by the Aspire Gymnastics center in Chandler and featured more than 58 participants, including 10 from Maricopa.

The event featured four age divisions with the following events: vault, bars, beam and floor.

Of the Maricopa participants Rebekah Horton, Qye Story, Kayla Kogutkiewicz and Cassidy Tilley took home first place finishes in all four events and won best all around in their age divisions.

Toni Frasquillo won the floor exercise and placed third in every other event, and Mckena Mairs, Emily Nowell, Taylia Johnson and Rosie French placed in the top three in all events. Nowell was the six-year-old all-around winner.

“I was very proud of them,” said Desert Star instructor Amy Bratlie. “They did extremely well.”

It was the last competition of the season for the gymnastics team, which will also hold a team garage sale at 44301 W. Maricopa / Casa Grande Highway to raise funds for the equipment and travel costs for the upcoming season.

“They are developing more quickly than anticipated which is good, but it has also increased the need for larger equipment,” Bratlie said.
