Two drivers were seriously injured Friday morning in a head-on collision on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway near Santa Rosa Springs Road.

The accident, which blocked a lane of traffic, left the rear wheels of a small red car resting atop a guardrail. Both that car and the other car, a four-door sedan, sustained massive front-end damage.

According to Maricopa police spokesman Ricardo Alvarado, it appeared the red car crossed into the opposite lane, striking the other vehicle. The cause was undetermined. The driver of the red car was drifting in and out of consciousness when first responders arrived on scene, police said.

“We aren’t ruling out impairment, but this will probably be determined with a blood test,” Alvarado said.

Emergency services were able to remove the occupants of the cars and both drivers were transported to a valley hospital with serious injuries, police said.
