A 15-year-old is in trouble at Maricopa High School for allegedly writing a “hit list.”

Maricopa Unified School District Superintendent Steve Chestnut said the list named MHS students and one staff member.

“The student who wrote the list was immediately removed from school and all school activities,” Chestnut stated in an email. “Further, the student was immediately referred to the Maricopa Police Department.”

MPD does not believe the list is tied to Tuesday’s bomb threat. MPD spokesman Ricardo Alvarado said that incident of “threat by fax” was apparently a global prank. Today, Prince Edward Island in Canada evacuated all of its schools after a similar faxed threat was received.

The hit list found at MHS, on the other hand, was apparently personal.

Police interviewed the student and those named on the list to ascertain the depth of the threat, whether any students are in danger and whether there was access to weapons. Alvarado said MPD is still in the middle of the investigation. He could not cite the specifics of the threat made on the list.

Chestnut said the hit list could lead to expulsion, though specific disciplinary action is confidential by law. Until a hearing officer makes a decision, the student may be kept away from school.
