The holiday season is upon us and it’s not too early to start thinking about holiday lights. The City of Maricopa Parks, Recreation and Libraries Department is producing the first-ever Holiday Homes on Parade presented by Global Water Resources. The event is designed to challenge the creative abilities of residents in the greater Maricopa area to produce a quality light display.

“We are looking for 60 to 75 families to sign up and participate in this year’s event,” PRL Director Marty McDonald stated. “The holiday season is a special time of year for many of us, and light displays are a reflection of the emotion we feel. Most of us are going to decorate our homes anyway, so why not enter a competition and win special prizes for your efforts?”

McDonald recently named Global Water Resources as the presenting sponsor for the event. ED 3 has also agreed to be a double gold sponsor.

Global Water Resources President Trevor Hill remarked, “Santa Cruz Water and Palo Verde Utilities Companies serve all of the homes in the new master planned communities, and sponsoring this event reflects the pride of being an integral part of these new communities in Maricopa. Most of us have memories of a leisurely drive or walk around town, looking at the holiday decorations and picking our own winners, while secretly getting ideas for our own homes next year. Maricopa is recreating these opportunities for our kids.”

The deadline for registration is quickly approaching. The PRL Department has designed an easy one page form you need to fill out so special maps can be printed for the event. All you have to do is agree to brighten the exterior of your home with lights and decorations, but NO music. The deadline to enter is Friday, November 18, 2005, at 5 p.m. You can download the form at www.cityofmaricopa.net

Decorations must be in place by Monday, November 28. Starting on that date, through Friday, December 16, residents can drive around, following a map provided by the city, view the decorations and vote for their top three displays online. If you don’t have computer access, you can cast your vote at City Hall.

The first place winner will receive a $250 gift certificate, while second place takes home a $150 gift certificate. Third place wins a $100 gift certificate. All gift certificates will be to Lowe’s Home Improvement Store.

Homes can be entered in one or more of the following exterior categories: Most Creative, Best Light Show, Best Theme, Best Use of Color and Best on Parade. The contest is open to everyone in the greater Maricopa area.
