there will be closures and restrictions on several East Valley freeways this weekend that could affect Maricopans traveling to the area. Restrictions are in place on I-10 and ADOT recommends planning for extra travel time when driving in the affected areas. [ADOT]

Eastbound Interstate 10 will be closed from U.S. 60 to Loop 202/Santan/South Mountain Freeway 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday while crews pave a new lane from Baseline Road to Ray Road, according to Arizona Department of Transportation.

Meanwhile, drivers on westbound I-10 also should plan for lane restrictions Saturday and Sunday while crews continue work on the new 48th Street bridge.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time if they travel through the area this weekend, ADOT says.

Rubberized-asphalt paving on the new eastbound lane is scheduled in two-mile increments over the next three weekends. One section will be paved each weekend.

ADOT will open each section after each weekend’s work, and the entire new eastbound lane south of Baseline Road is scheduled to open in October.

During this weekend’s closure, the following ramps will be closed:

  • Westbound U.S. 60 onto eastbound I-10.
  • HOV ramps in both directions that connect I-10 and U.S. 60.
  • Eastbound I-10 on-ramps at 40th Street and Broadway, Baseline, Elliot, Warner and Ray roads.
  • Eastbound U.S. 60 on-ramps and off-ramps at Mill Avenue.

Drivers on southbound State Route 143 who are heading to eastbound I-10 will be routed through a detour onto U.S. 60.

ADOT is recommending drivers use eastbound Loop 202/Red Mountain Freeway or eastbound U.S. 60, to southbound Loop 101/Price Freeway, to westbound Loop 202/Santan Freeway to access eastbound I-10 beyond the closure.

In addition, the eastbound Santan Freeway will be closed from 56th Street to 40th Street from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday for unrelated maintenance work, so ADOT advises drivers to expect delays and allow extra travel time.

Motorists who need to access eastbound I-10 when on-ramps at 40th Street and Broadway are closed should use eastbound Broadway Road, to southbound Priest Drive, to eastbound U.S. 60, to southbound Loop 101, to westbound Loop 202 to access eastbound I-10 beyond the closure, according to ADOT.

Finally, westbound I-10 will be narrowed to two lanes from Broadway Road to 48th Street from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday for bridge work, and again from 10 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Monday. During the Saturday night to Monday morning restriction, westbound I-10 off-ramps and on-ramps at Broadway Road will be closed. Drivers can use westbound I-10 off-ramps and on-ramps at 40th Street instead.
