Interest in MHS boys’ golf high

Maricopa High School boys’ golf coach Jake Gomez is excited with the growth of the program this year.

“We have 16 golfers out this season, up from six last year,” Gomez said.

The team is a lot younger this season as there are no returning seniors and last year’s captains, Niles Getz and Bernardo Juarez, both graduated.

The team has been focused and working hard to build upon a few wins they experienced at the end of last season after a rough start.

The team finished 2-9 last season and is 1-4 midway through the 2014 campaign.

“We have been practicing at the The Duke in Rancho El Dorado on most days,” Gomez said. “We have been working on all parts of game including putting, short game, long irons and driver.”

Gomez says the focus has been on preparing mentally and physically to use the skills you have to manage the golf course.
Some of the young players have been willing to take a leadership role.

“With no senior leaders we are relying on the experience of returning players junior Tyler Getz, and sophomores Zack Seamans and Zach Huskey,” Gomez said.

Getz and Seamans have been improving dramatically and have a chance to compete at the state level, according to Gomez.

“I expect us to improve as the season goes on,” Gomez said. “We are laying the foundation for a golf program that has the potential to be highly competitive for years to come with the high number of young players interested in the sport. We will focus in the present and work on the things that we can control in order to have successful program going forward. “
