The Maricopa City Council will meet in a special session tonight at 6 p.m. to vote on naming City Clerk Vanessa Bueras interim city manager.

If approved, the emergency appointment will become effective Jan. 21 at an annual salary of $148,724.

The city council hired Waters-Oldani Executive Recruitment firm in November for $22,000 to find the city’s next manager.

The firm plans to extend an offer to the candidate they select by Feb. 22.

Current City Manager Kevin Evans requested a severance agreement on Sept. 29. Under the agreement approved by the city council Evans agreed to stay in position until Jan. 21.

After he steps down, Evans will receive up to a year’s salary, accrued sick and vacation time and 12 months of city benefits. The salary and benefits will continue until Evans finds a job paying a minimum of 80 percent of his $156,950 salary, or until 12 months have elapsed.

Council will meet at the Maricopa Unified School District office, 44150 W. Maricopa Casa Grande Highway.
