The Maricopa High Athletic Department has a new face to lead the sports scene for the Rams.

Jeff Kleck was named to the athletic director’s post earlier this month, replacing Tyler Brandt, who resigned his athletic director and assistant principal duties to concentrate on his head coaching duties with the football team. Kleck’s resume is long on experience as he settles into his new role.

“I have coached football and track for a combined 30 years,” Kleck said. “Originally from Oregon, I have been an administrator for about 13 years.” One of Kleck’s achievements was helping La Grande High School win the Oregon Cup. “It’s an award based on points given for state finals finishes combined with the highest student GPA.”

Kleck said he has always been involved in athletics, wanting to continue after retiring from coaching as an athletic director. “Maricopa is an attractive job opportunity because of the growth, community commitment, and zeal of the community for athletics,” Kleck said.

Kleck said with Maricopa High School moving up to the 3A level, the competition will be steep, but the school’s athletes will be prepared to face their opponents with appropriate technical skills, physical ability, and mental tenacity.

Asked what goals he has in his new role, Kleck noted, “Winning (quality) programs, good sportsmanship, and excellent coaching.”

Maricopa High School fields varsity teams in football, baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, track and volleyball. The school has the same number of varsity sports from a year ago; however, because of growth, Kleck noted there will probably be additional freshmen squads. Maricopa has added several new coaches since last season.
