The Maricopa High girl’s basketball team scored just two points in the first three quarters against Coolidge High School Tuesday night and lost to 70-17. The blowout extends Maricopa’s winless streak to six games to start the season.

Maricopa (0-6, 0-2) grabbed the opening tip but managed just one field goal by Marrisa Lubag in the first quarter. The Rams were held scoreless in the middle quarters and entered the fourth period down 52-2.

“This game was about heart,” Coach Jenn Miller said. “And we didn’t find ours until the fourth quarter.”

During the final eight minutes, Brittany Parks scored nine points for the Rams. Lubag added four to her total and Andrea Esposito scored two points accounting for all the Rams’ scoring.

In addition to the team’s troubles making shots from the field, the Rams made just one of 11 free throw attempts. According to Miller, a priority for the team will be to start taking good shots.

“This could be a pivotal game for us,” Miller said. “Either the girls will realize they aren’t satisfied with themselves and make something of this season, or they will decide this really isn’t that important and give up.”

Miller said she knows her girls well and believes they will choose the first option.

The Rams next chance to break into the “win” column is Wednesday against South Pointe, the team’s last non-conference game of the season.
