Maricopa-based Legacy Traditional Charter School kicked off classes this past Monday despite delays in construction to both the existing and the new campus.

Even with the delays, the school’s enrollment numbers are up from 400 at the end of last year to 900 this year. Legacy caps class sizes at 28 students, but most classes are in the mid-20s.

Administrator Laurie Ocampos is excited to start the school year and feels Legacy has superb students. Her goals for the school year include children learning the curriculum and working together as a community to ensure their educational success.

“Our curriculum at Legacy is above state standards and very advanced. By passing our courses, student exceed state standards,” Ocampos said.

Ocampos reminds parents that the school begins its EESI testing in three weeks. EESI is a test the school uses to evaluate students and determine areas needing improvement.

Legacy is divided into six grading cycles with progress reports released every six weeks. During each of those weeks the school will focus on one of the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Respect is the first week’s focus.

“I have heard excellent things from all the teachers and look forward to a great year,” Ocampos said.
