Local businesses, MOMS Club raise $1,000 at Oktoberfest

Desert Sun Performing Arts, Desert Star Gymnastics and the Maricopa MOMS Club Maricopa-Cruz staged the inaugural Oktoberfest for kids Saturday, raising more than $1,000 for homeless kids in the process.

The event was held in the parking lot of the Maricopa Manor Business Center and featured all things kids, including games, bounce house and a root beer float garden. Many other local businesses also supported the event as vendors or raffle item donors.

“My favorite part was when my students said to me, ‘I can’t believe we did this! This was so cool!'” Ceylan Gentilella, owner of Desert Sun Performing Arts, said. “They were actually psyched to do something good and to give back to the community by helping others.”

The group more than doubled its fundraising goal of $500. Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase backpacks and other necessities for local homeless students.
