City Councilman Edward Farrell and JW Salazar, a member of the Fire District Board, successfully staged the inaugural Super Sunday Swing at The Duke Sunday. The event included a golf tournament and Super Bowl party and raised more than $3,600 for the nonprofit Maricopa Cultural Activity Center (see related story).

“The city funds aren’t going to see any of this money,” Farrell said. The intent is to purchase youth sports equipment and library books, but Farrell said he would defer to the Parks, Recreation and Library Committee and Mary Lou Smith, head of the Maricopa Cultural Activity Center and member of the PRL committee, to determine the greatest need.

Martin McDonald, director of the city’s PRL department, said of the new funds “We’ll be smart with how we use it and it will benefit the community.”

The golf tournament was won by the team of Greg Cameron, Fred Enke, Norman Hamilton and Mark Walczak. Brian Daelick won the Longest Drive contest on hole #4 and Rick McCann walked away with both the Closest to the Pin (#13) and Longest Putt (#18) prizes.
