Major East Valley freeways to close this weekend

1896

If you’re headed to the Valley this weekend, be sure to allow extra travel time, especially if traveling on two specific freeways.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said improvement projects and repairs will require closures or lane restrictions on US 60 and I-10 in the East Valley. It is recommending that drivers allow extra travel time, check on alternate routes and stay alert in work zones while restrictions are in place.

Eastbound US 60 (Superstition Freeway) will be closed between I-10 and McClintock Drive the entire weekend for pavement repair in Tempe following the May 7 water main break near McClintock. Recommended detours: north of US 60, use the eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to southbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway); south of US 60, take eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) in the Chandler area to northbound Loop 101.

The road will be closed until the work can be completed. The southbound SR 143 on-ramp at University Drive and eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Broadway Road are also closed for the duration of the project.

Westbound US 60 between McClintock and Loop 101 will also be closed. Westbound traffic will be detoured to north- or southbound Loop 101. Northbound Loop 101 traffic can detour on westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to approach Sky Harbor Airport or downtown Phoenix. Traffic detouring to southbound Loop 101 can use westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway to connect with I-10 in the Chandler area.

In a separate project, eastbound I-10 will narrow to three lanes between 24th and 48th streets near Sky Harbor Airport from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for light pole installation as part of the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.

Also on I-10 eastbound, the freeway will narrow to three lanes between Elliot and Warner roads from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday for barrier work for the same project. The eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Elliot Road and eastbound off-ramp at Warner Road will be closed, and ADOT recommends using other nearby eastbound I-10 on- or off-ramps (such as the eastbound off-ramp at Elliot or the on-ramp at Warner). The eastbound I-10 off-ramp at Chandler Boulevard also will be closed from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday for barrier work. Use Ray Road as an alternate.
