Ched Bayles

A Maricopa man was arrested Monday on assault charges stemming from a strange incident of alleged domestic violence where the man reportedly slashed the victims bicycle tires after pushing her to the ground and threatening her.

Ched Bayles, 28, attempted to evade police after the incident that occurred in the early morning hours of Dec. 11.

According to a Maricopa Police Department report, around 12:30 a.m. Bayles and the victim, later identified as his girlfriend, were walking with their bikes near John Wayne Parkway and Alterra Parkway when Bayles allegedly “began acting strange” and aggressively grabbed her, causing them both to fall.

Bayles then proceeded to kneel on the victim’s chest, restricting her breathing while allegedly saying “I could just hit you in the face,” according to the report.

The victim said Bayles eventually stood up and, using a camouflage folding knife, allegedly slashed the tires on both bikes.

Bayles then fled the scene prior to MPD’s arrival.

Roughly two hours later, around 2:45 a.m. Bayles was spotted in the area and, when approached by officers, attempted to flee on foot. After a short chase, Bayles was successfully arrested and booked into Pinal County Jail, charged with assault, theft and criminal damage.

Along with one of the bikes, Bayles is also accused of stealing a flashlight from his girlfriend.

The combined value of the damaged and stolen items totals around $1,175.

Bayles has an extensive history of petty crimes including shoplifting, drug and alcohol related charges and a litany of traffic citations.

If convicted, Bayles faces more than a year in jail.
