The Maricopa High School baseball team secured second place Friday at home, beating the San Pasqual Valley Warriors 7-8.

The game was an offensive battle from the first inning when the Warriors took the lead in the top half of the inning, only to have Maricopa score two runs in the bottom half.

The only two innings without a score from either side followed. Then, in the top of the fourth, San Pasqual Valley tied the game at two.

Maricopa answered with four of their own. After Lionel Iglesias, Joe Zabawa and Cody Seymore walked, three consecutive singles brought in fours runs to give the Rams a 6-2 lead.

The Rams added another pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. San Pasqual Valley scored at least one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but was unable to overcome the deficit Maricopa created.

The final score of 7-8 gave the Rams their ninth win of league play and their 14th for the season.

By finishing second place in the division, the Rams earned a spot in the Arizona 2A division tournament, which starts this Thursday. Maricopa’s first game will be Friday, May 4, at 9 a.m.

The game will be played at Maryvale Baseball Park.

If the Rams win the first game, they will go on to play at the same field on Saturday, also at 9 a.m.
