Although Central Arizona College’s fall semester started in August, students wanting to earn college credits now don’t have to wait until January to get started.

Central’s Maricopa Center is offering several mid- and late-term classes designed to make higher education accessible to the local community, including a pair of early childhood education courses taking place on Saturdays.

Starting Oct. 4 and running through Oct. 18, the ECE 120D class entitled Ensuring a Safe Environment will be held from 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. on three consecutive Saturdays.

The class teaches practices and procedures to use when providing for the safety of children in early childhood programs.

Each Saturday from Nov. 1 through Nov. 18, the ECE 250 class Professionalism will discuss the history of the profession, advocacy of ethical behavior and commitment to professional growth.

The two early childhood education classes are hybrid courses that may be taught through several delivery methods, including face-to-face interaction with an instructor, interactive television and the Internet.

Each one-credit course is a requirement for many of the early childhood education degree and certificate programs at Central Arizona College. Students should always check with an advisor to ensure proper classes are being scheduled.

Also offered at the Maricopa Center in October are a face-to-face pre-algebra class (MAT 086) and a sociology course (SOC 203) entitled Marriage & Family.

The three-credit pre-algebra course is a review of the fundamental concepts of algebra and is designed to provide a strong base for success in future algebra courses. It will run from 6 -7:50 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday nights from Oct. 13 through Dec. 11.

The sociology class is a comprehensive examination of marriage and the family as a cultural unit and a social institution. The three-credit course will be held Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12-1:20 p.m. starting Oct. 20. The class will conclude on Dec. 11.

Central Arizona College will be offering an English Language Acquisition (ESL 082) class and an Adult Basic Education (ABE 081) course on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6-9 p.m. beginning Oct. 14 and concluding Dec. 9. The two courses will have in-class instructors.
