The Maricopa Fire Department responded to a house fire on the 19000 block of North Shelby Drive around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Department spokesman Jon Sheaffer said when crews arrived on scene, a car parked in an open garage at the residence was on fire.

Firefighters quickly searched the house and did not find any residents, Sheaffer said. The fire was contained to the garage and extinguished shortly before 7 p.m.

There were no reports of injuries.

A nanny and three kids were inside the residence when the fire started, Sheaffer said. They were able to get out unharmed. A dog that remained in the backyard when firefighters arrived was not injured.

The fire department is still investigating what caused the blaze, he said. The flames were initially thought to have originated from the vehicle, but investigators now think the fire began somewhere from inside the garage.

At the scene, a front portion of the house’s second story above the garage appeared black and charred.  Neighborhood residents gathered in a nearby park to watch emergency crews work.

Sheaffer said when a residence catches on fire, a person should never go back once they exit, even if a pet or another person is still in the home.

"Once you're out, stay out," he said.
