Maricopa High cross country playing the numbers game

Maricopa High cross country is off to the races as a new season is unfolding on the local scene.

After a slow start, the Rams are ready to win.

“I’m excited to work with a full team this season,” Coach Duane Anderson said.

To start the school year, the roster was too short to qualify as a team for competition, but Anderson was able to round up what he feels is a great group of kids to fill the list. Within two weeks, Anderson hopes to have a full team of seven girls and six boys competing in meets. Currently there is only one girl competing.

When there aren’t enough people to compete as a team, runners can still race for individual honors, as the few Rams who started the season have done.

Maricopa will run in the Lions Invitational at Ojo Rojo this Saturday.

“It was a little frustrating to start another season without a full team,” Anderson said.

Now that his original goal of filling a team has been met, Anderson is looking to make the state meet, where the top teams from each division compete.

“They’re all working hard, and I know that if we keep improving the wins will follow,” Anderson added.

If interested in seeing the Rams in action, Maricopa will be hosting a meet at the Duke on Sept. 26 at 4 p.m.
