A Maricopa High School junior faces discipline and possible police action after bringing an airsoft gun on campus Wednesday, according to a MUSD press release.

No other students were in danger and the student with the gun was not found to be disgruntled with any individual, family member or school personnel.

The press release quotes Wikipedia: “Airsoft guns are replica firearms that fire plastic pellets by way of compressed gas or electric and/or spring-driven pistons. These guns are designed to be nonlethal and to provide realistic replicas.”

High school security personnel discovered the student and the airsoft gun.

The Maricopa Police Department was involved in the investigation and the student is facing charges. The student also will be disciplined in accordance with Maricopa Unified
School District governing board policies, according to the press release.

Superintendent Steve Chestnut said Thursday the policy allows board members to modify discipline on a case-by-case basis, but a student could face from a minimum one year placement in an alternative education program to indefinite expulsion.
