93

Take yourself out to the ballgames this week when Maricopa Little League hosts the Arizona State Sectionals of Little League Softball.

According to Teena Dugan, tournament director, this is the first time in four or five years that Maricopa has hosted this event.

“The state is broken in half, and we are hosting the southern part of the state,” said Dugan. “These girls are the best of the best.”

Seven different districts will be represented in the tournament. They are: Santa Cruz District 4 (the Eloy girls who are this area’s champs), Tucson District 5 (Oro Valley), Red Mountain District 7 (east Mesa and Apache Junction), Rio Rico District 8, District 11 (Clifton and Morenci), south Tucson District 12 and San Tan District 14 (Queen Creek).

Games will be played on the Maricopa High School field at 5:30 and 8 p.m. on July 17, 19, 20, 21 and 22 with a 7 p.m. game on July 23. Two winners from this tournament, as well as two from the northern sectional tournament, will advance to state competition,  played at the Rio Vista Sports Complex. Winners at the state level go on to national competition.

“The school district has been phenomenal, and we’re so appreciative,” Dugan said, in regard to the preparations for the tournament on the high school field.

Maricopa Little League is in charge of the tournament organization, and they will also provide snack bar workers, scorekeepers and any other personnel needed for the six-day event.

Although Maricopa does not have a team in the southern sectional tournament, Maricopa Little League junior girls’ softball team, ages 13-14, will play in the state tournament in Mesa on July 23.
