Maricopa Mavericks 10U Club baseball team is traveling to San Diego today to compete in the Xtreme Baseball World Series. This event will have over 200 teams (ages 8-18) from 10 states and also a few teams from Mexico.

The Mavericks will have four pool play games and then enter a single-elimination bracket. Pool play starts Wednesday. This tournament is open level, which means any team on any playing level can enter. [quote_box_right]

Most sanctions the Mavericks play in have different classification levels based on the teams skill level. That usually starts off at AA, then AAA and then Majors, which is the highest level of play. There are 10 Majors level teams entered in our bracket, but Maricopa has played at this level most of the year. All of the Mavericks have played an age division above (11U) most of the year.

There will be championship rings awarded for first and second place.

“I’ve always been a strong believer in playing the best teams at the highest level,” coach Geno Chavez said. “We have taken first or second in every 10U tournament we played this past year.”

On Tuesday for opening day, the boys’ schedule includes:

* skills contest
* fly over and national anthem
* team introduction
* MLB Fanfest
* Pin Trading

Boys will also parade around Petco Park with all the teams participating in the World Series on Friday before a Padres v. Reds game.

“There are several World Series events to choose from by different baseball sanctions in other nearby states, but San Diego was an easy choice for a July tournament,” Chavez said. “We are used to practicing in 100-degree weather this last month and now we get to play in 75-degree weather!  Boys are excited to get out to California to compete. Two kids on the team have never seen the ocean and can’t wait.”

On Aug. 1, everyone has to move up an age level so this will be these boys’ last tournament at the 10U level. Mavericks have teams that compete at two age divisions (10U & 11U).

In the past year, the Maricopa Mavericks have competed in 20 tournaments and a total of 85 games. Follow the Mavericks at the Xtreme Baseball World Series at https://www.facebook.com/maricopamavericks/ and https://www.instagram.com/maricopamavericks/
