The Maricopa police and fire departments ran and biked a 10-mile leg Friday in the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a statewide fundraiser for the Special Olympics.

This was the first year the departments participated independently of the Ak-Chin Police Department.

The 10 bikers started at Maricopa Auto Spa and Detail just south of the railroad tracks on John Wayne Parkway and biked 10 miles. The five runners, including Police Chief Steve Stahl, started at Desert Wind Middle School on Honeycutt Road and ran about four miles to the finish line.

Stahl and police Sgt. Timothy Truett, one of the bikers, each carried a torch through the finish line at Crossfit Battlefit at Murphy Road and the Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway.

Stahl said the event shows Maricopa community cares.

“The police department, the fire department, citizens, all city of Maricopa employees really care about those who can’t do this, who can’t go out and run on a regular basis, who can’t ride bicycles,” he said.

Police volunteers handed out snacks and water provided by the Tortosa HOA.

Truett said the police department raised about $800 selling shirts throughout April.
