Maricopa Public Library’s newest ‘reads’

The Maricopa Public Library has some great new books this month. The featured titles are an eclectic mix of fiction and nonfiction for children and adults.

In fiction, Patricia Cornwell’s latest The Scarpetta Factor: This is Cornwell’s 17th book in the Kay Scarpetta series and our famous forensic specialist finds herself reevaluating her life in this new mystery. A search for terrorists in Washington D.C. is at the heart of Vince Flynn’s Pursuit of Honor, featuring counter terrorism operative Mitch Rapp and his team.

If you had an opportunity to read your obituary, would you? Would you want to know what people really thought of you? Well, that’s the basis for Richard Paul Evans’ The Christmas List.

NPR asked author Gregory Maguire to write a story with a Christmas theme, and the result is a rewrite of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Little Match Girl,” entitled Matchless: A Christmas Story.

Another title that will make the reader wonder if one can make amends is Karen Kingsbury’s new drama Shades of Blue. It’s the story of a young and successful man who must go back to a time in his life before he can move on to his future.

Paranormal writer Charlaine Harris has two new books out this month: Book #4 in the Harper Connelly mystery series is Grave Secret and Sookie Stackhouse’s latest fantasy adventure, A Touch of Dead. Psychiatrist and writer Jonathan Kellerman’s mystery Evidence is #24 in the Alex Delaware series. The most personal story of Harry Bosch is revealed in Michael Connelly’s 9 Dragons. Harry must search for his missing daughter. If detective Spenser is your man, he returns in Robert B. Parker’s The Professional. This is #38 in the Spenser series, and more is sure to come.

Robert Jordan will delight fans with his newest book in the Wheel of Time series, The Gathering Storm. The death of a fourteen-year-old boy reverberates through the pages of John Irving’s Last Night in Twisted River. Rounding out adult fiction is David Baldacci’s murder mystery set in Washington D.C. where a disgraced cop hopes for redemption in True Blue.

Young adult readers can look forward to Tempted, the sixth book in the House of Night series. It continues with the saga of Zoey Redbird, High Priestess in training. Fans of the Wimpy Kid series can look forward to Dog Days, book #4 in the series by author Jeff Kinney.

For non-fiction fans new books include Valerie Bertinelli’s Finding It, an inspirational work featuring Jenny Craig’s celebrity spokeswoman. Hulk Hogan’s tabloid life is at the heart of his autobiography, My Life Outside the Ring. Augusten Burrough’s latest memoir, You Better Not Cry, shares his thoughts about the Christmas holiday. If you enjoyed the Tipping Point and his most recent bestseller The Outliers, you’ll want to read Malcolm Gladwell’s What the Dog Saw, a book of essays on a variety of topics. Finally, there’s Steven Levitt’s SuperFreakonomics, a follow up to his very successful Freakonomics.
