Maricopa to host community salsa festival

So you think you make a mean salsa do you? Well, you’ll have a chance to claim city-wide bragging rights this spring at the inaugural Maricopa Salsa Festival. The event is yet another production of Maricopa’s Parks and Rec department, which has also staged Recreation Days and Founder’s Day celebrations since the department’s inception last summer.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2 to 5 p.m. at Maricopa High School. In addition to the salsa tasting and competition, live entertainment and other family activities will be offered. “Best of” salsa awards will tentatively be given in the categories of Hottest, Most Unusual, Mild and Open.

The festival is the brainchild of Parks and Rec director Martin McDonald. A team of volunteers is assisting in the production of the event, led by committee members Scott Bartle, Aime Boekhout, Dan Conlon, Kari Deets, Melissa Kunz and Dawn Madden. David Aviles, Barbara Brady, Tom Dugan and the Maricopa High School Key Club are also helping plan the inaugural event.
