Maricopa Youth Football offering pre-season mini-camp

The Maricopa Youth Football League (MYFL) is gearing up for another year of the sport. As in previous seasons, a mini-camp will be held to enable current and prospective players the opportunity to get a firsthand look at the league, its coaches and other players.

The mini-camp will be held at Pacana Park from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, July 11, with registration beginning at 7 a.m. The cost is $35.

“We are approaching the start of our fall 2009 season, and we would like to see a great turnout for our pre-season football camp,” said league registrar Tom Olguin.

Community, business and corporate sponsorships support the league, a non-profit organization. Coaches and officials are all volunteers whose goal is to teach sportsmanship, teamwork and discipline while building strength, character and dedication in local youth.

Last year the league had five of its six teams make the playoffs, bringing home two titles to Maricopa.

Open to boys and girls in the Maricopa area, the league is divided into three age brackets: 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. Within each of these brackets are typically two local teams with names like Bears, Cougars, Mustangs and Vipers.

The teams in the Maricopa division go throughout the county, competing against teams from Casa Grande, Apache Junction, Eloy and other Pinal County cities in both fall and spring leagues.
