Meet a smart car or drive on corn

From shedding plastic bags in favor of reusable cloth in grocery stores to purchasing more fuel-efficient vehicles, members of the public are choosing the environment.

To help with these decisions, Central Arizona College’s Lifelong Learners Program (C.A.L.L) is offering a pair of interesting classes for the environmentally conscious.

Meet the Smart Car is an introduction to the French automobile that is sweeping the nation. Rhonda Jackson, a CAC staff member, will co-lead the classes scheduled for Oct. 28 at the Superstition Mountain Campus and on Oct. 29 at the CAC Corporate Center in Casa Grande.

Jackson is a former Toyota pickup driver who bought a Smart Car in May.

“I wanted to downsize and looked at a lot of hybrids,” she explained, “but what really sold me on the Smart Car was that it gets 41 miles per gallon, and it costs less than anything else.”

In addition to Jackson, a representative from the Chandler Smart Car Dealership will be available to answer questions.

On Nov. 6, John Skelley, the general manager of Pinal Energy, LLC, in Maricopa, Arizona’s first ethanol production company, will talk about the fuel alternative and its importance in today’s world during Ethanol Production and Use. The class will be held at the CAC Corporate Center in Casa Grande.

Ethanol is becoming more important to Americans as the search for ending dependency on foreign oil escalates.
