Meet the teacher: Heidi Zimmer

Maricopa Elementary School teacher, Heidi Zimmer, bases her approach to teaching on her belief in children.

Zimmer like many other teachers before her, decided to become a teacher because of a love for children. “I always wanted to have the opportunity to be a memory in a future adult’s life that was positive and inspiring in nature,” Zimmer said.

Zimmer has been making a difference in Maricopa children’s lives for two and a half years.

Before arriving in the Maricopa district, Zimmer was teaching in the Higley School District. “A very unexpected and wonderful opportunity came up for me mid-school year. MES was expanding and hiring an additional staff member for fifth grade. I was ready for a change of scenery and took the chance. I am very happy to be at MES and love this new assignment,” Zimmer said.

Her approach to teaching is based on belief. “I feel that every child can be a success,” Zimmer said. “Some of us are shining brightly the first day of school; others of us shine after a few months. We are all different, but the one thing students all have in common is that one special area they excel in.”

Zimmer said what sets her apart from other teachers is the environment she establishes for children. “I exude a positive attitude wherever I go and tend to be a solver not a complainer. There is so much in the world that I would like to see changed for the better, but I enjoy working with others to find a solution rather than complain and do nothing.”

When she is not teaching, Zimmer enjoys cooking, watching the Food Network and reading.

“I am a voracious reader and read several books a month,” Zimmer said.
