Maricopa High School student and Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Ryan “Doughnut” Dougherty received an outstanding performance award from Air Force Retired Col. Scott Lewis, Chief, Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp (AFJROTC) Instructor Management, Nov. 8.

Every three years the AFJROTC headquarters conducts a program review and the evaluator, Lewis in this case, has the prerogative to award up to two cadets from each school unit for their performance.

Ryan, Maricopa High School AFJROTC’s first recipient, has been part of the program since it started in January 2011. He is the unit’s senior enlisted adviser and physical fitness leader. Among his accomplishments, Ryan was recognized during last month’s Army sponsored fitness challenge in which he set a new record of 136 pushups in the two minutes allotted.

The Air Force JROTC program is taught by Maj. James Alonzo and Sgt. Dishon Gregory.
