MHS baseball struggles continue

The Maricopa High School boys team dropped a heartbreaker Friday night to Santa Cruz.

The team led going into the sixth inning 2-1 but, thanks to one earned run and two unearned runs, Santa Cruz was able to take the lead 4-2.

“We made too many mistakes in the sixth inning to win,” said coach Charles Barbee.

Maricopa High had a chance to win the game in the ninth when they loaded the bases, but were unable to drive in the winning runs.

“We out hit them the entire game, but we were just unable to get the key hits,” Barbee said.

Matt Clark gave a strong pitching performance going six innings, giving one earned run and five hits.

Next up for the team is a road game at Florence, who defeated Maricopa 5-3 in the last match-up.

“They are a good team, and I expect another strong effort out of my players,” Barbee said
