Feb. 10, the Maricopa High School Rams Choir attended the annual Jazz and Madrigal Festival at Northern Arizona University (NAU) and received a rating of Excellent.

“It has been 10 years since Maricopa was represented at this festival, and these students were great ambassadors for the city and MHS,” Choral Director Lindsay Decoste said.

The choir attended a concert by NAU’s two vocal jazz groups and watched several other high school groups perform. They performed in Ashurst Auditorium (part of the oldest building on campus) and were able to work with Lori Marie Rios, a renowned conductor and educator from California.

“Maestro Rios gave them some very valuable feedback that will be used by the choir to become an even better group throughout the rest of the year,” Decoste said.

The annual Northern Arizona University Vocal Jazz Madrigal Festival, one of the largest festivals of its kind in the southwestern United States, features special guest clinicians and over 140 high school ensembles from Arizona and nearby states.
