The Maricopa High School girls’ soccer team ended the season with a 6-6-4 record after winning four of their final five games.

The Rams started the year with three ties before a rough stretch saw them win just twice over an eight game span. However, the young team recovered and closed out the season with four straight victories before dropping their final game against Higley High School.

“These girls are like the cardiac kids. They never give up,” head coach Mallory Miller said. “We’ve had our ups and downs like a roller coaster ride. We started out well to open the season. Then we went down and lately we’ve come back up.”

Maricopa was one of the youngest teams in the state this year. With just one senior leaving, the 2016-17 girls’ team will have a great opportunity to compete with the best teams in the state in the new Arizona Interscholastic Association 5A Conference.

“Our defense, hands down, has kept us in a lot of games this year,” Miller said. “Brianna (Barba) our goalie has come up with big saves and it gave a spark to our offense.

“All around, I’m happy with everything [we’ve accomplished] this year,” Miller said.

Maricopa will return nearly all of their standout players next season, including junior goalkeeper Brianna Barba, junior forward Amanda Maciel and freshman midfielder Shannon Coutré.
