Maricopa High School’s students and staff will be showcasing their talents, creativity and ingenuity on April 22 during the annual Night of Excellence.

The event, which begins at 6 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m., will feature Shakespeare_a_Palooza from the Language Arts Department with performances, displays, Romeo on trial, discussions on heroes and villains, as well as a Shakespearean insult battle and drinks and snacks in the Socrates Café.

Social studies students will offer presentations on various social and historical movements, including the Renaissance, the French Revolution, the Roman Empire and civil rights. Modern Language will have piñata displays, family tree projects and presentations about various Spanish-speaking countries.

Experiments, DNA models and rocketry will all be part of the Science Department’s offerings. Math games will be available for all to play, and tours of the new weight room facilities will be offered. The Culinary Arts Department will have an Internet Café clustered around baked goods to experience.

“Every department on campus is involved, and the teachers and students alike are all working hard to make this an entertaining and enjoyable evening for people of all ages,” said drama instructor Lori VanScyoc.

In addition to an art exhibit, as well as dance and choir performances in various places around the campus, VanScyoc’s drama students will present an hilarious compilation of the many Grimm’s fairy tales into a one hour, gender-blind story.

“It is an evening that really showcases just what Maricopa High School has to offer our community, and I think the public will be pleasantly surprised,” VanScyoc said.
