Girl basketball players, wrestlers in contention

The Maricopa High School girls’ varsity basketball team will play Queen Creek High School in the first round of the DII, Section 1 tournament 4 p.m. Tuesday at Desert Ridge High School.

Depending on the outcome, MHS could host the first round of the state playoff games next week, said Cory Nenaber, Maricopa Unified School District athletic director.

Also, the Maricopa varsity wrestling team had a great showing over the weekend at its sectional tournament with six wrestlers qualifying and advancing to the state tournament this week in Prescott.

The qualifiers are:

126 – Kain Evans, third place
132 – TJ Cullinan, third place
138 – Ryan Dougherty, fourth place
160 – Bryant Downes, third place
170 – Shawn Gunter, third place
182 – Walter Ibarra, champion
