Maricopa High School held its annual senior awards night May 8, to recognize the achievements of the graduating class of 2023.

Family, friends and MUSD faculty gathered in the school’s Performing Arts Center to celebrate community awards, military honors, student of the year, academic and athletic achievements, university scholarships and a slew of individual awards totaling about $7 million.

Many Rams are headed across the country to continue their education, while some are staying close to home. From Arizona State and University of Arizona to New Mexico, the night was a fitting tribute to send them off following graduation.

“It’s always so much fun to celebrate the accomplishments of our students,” MUSD Governing Board Member Patti Coutré said following the event.

The list of esteemed awards include:

  • 41 graduates achieving Academic Excellence, graduating with a 4.0 or higher
  • 16 enlistments into the United States Military
  • 23 merit scholarships to the University of Arizona
  • 60 merit scholars and awards to Central Arizona College
  • 28 merit scholarships to Arizona State University
  • 56 merit scholarships to Northern Arizona University
  • 8 athletic scholarships, including Alyssa Etzel as the female academic athlete of the year; Ayden De La Garza as the male academic athlete of the year; Haylee Brown as the female athlete of the year; Bryan Perez as the male athlete of the year

U.S. Navy Recruiter Timothy Seybold presented awards to 11 future sailors during the ceremony.

“We’re very excited that they are taking their next step in being adults and amazing people,.” Seybold said.

Governing Board Member Torri Anderson noted the district’s continued improvement.

“It gets better every year as our classes grow,” she said. “We’ve come a long way.”
