MHS swimmers set school records in first meet

School records were demolished Thursday as Maricopa High School swim team launched its 2020 season.

The boys’ and girls’ teams defeated Casa Grande.

“It was a great showing for our first meet of an unusual meet season,” coach Laura Logan said. “Our guys shattered and set three new school records and our girls set four new school records.”

The MHS boys won all 11 events for the overall win, 112-38. The Rams’ 200 medley relay team of Connor Schrader, Nolan Ford, Abel Rodriguez and Andrew Varga destroyed the previous school record by 13 seconds by winning in 1:50.49.

Schrader, a junior, also won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.44 and the 100 backstroke in 57.75.

Ford, also a junior, was just as busy, dropping the school record by four seconds in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.13 while also winning the 200 individual medley in 2:11.95.

Rodriguez, a senior, won the 100 butterfly in 1:15.4. Sophomore Bryan Perez won the 500 freestyle in 7:06.52. The 200 freestyle relay team of Ford, Rodriguez, Varga and Schrader took first place, as did the 400 free relay team of Perez, Geric Kramarcyzk, Alex Borunda and Morgan Godfrey.

Second-place finishers for the Rams were Perez in the 200 freestyle, Godfrey in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly and Rafe Scoresby in the 100 freestyle and 500 free.

Freshman Ian Byers was third in the 100 backstroke and Kramarcyzk was third in the 100 breaststroke. Third-place relay teams were Byers, Kramarcyzk, Victor Moreno and Scoresby in the 200 medley and Moreno, Kramarcyzk, Perez and Byers in the 200 free.

The MHS girls won nine of their 11 events for the overall win, 105-53.

The 200 medley relay team of MacKenzie Fair, Katelyn Owens, Dori Hames and Olivia Byers took 10 seconds off the school record to win in 2:09.71.

Fair, a freshman, set a school record (by nine seconds) in the 500 freestyle with a winning time of 6:08.79. She also won the 200 free in 2:15.66.

Sophomore Katelyn Owens won the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.89 for another school record and won the 200 IM in 2:48.86.

Byers, a senior, won the 50 freestyle in 26.96 and the 100 free in 1:00.73. Hames, a junior, won the 100 fly in 1:18.37. The relay team of Fair, Owens, Hames and Byers won the 200 free in 1:56.71.

Second-place finishers included senior Aubree Witteman in the 200 free, Hames in the 200 IM, junior Lexi Nordhoff in the 100 fly, junior Sophia Occhiline in the 500 free and 100 back, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Isabella Piwowar Wittmann, Emily Hollingsworth and Occhiline.

Finishing in third place were Hollingsworth in the 500 free, sophomore Rylee Pirtle in the 100 back, sophomore Shelby Eisenacher in the 100 breast, the 200 medley relay team of Pirtle, Nordhoff, Occhiline and Piowawar, and the 400 free relay team of Emily Fauth, Kaitlyn Crean, Savannah Willman and Genevieve Pierce.

The swim team’s next meet is schedule for Oct. 1 at Copper Sky.
