MHS track team prepares for ‘big’ season

Despite losing all but around 10 members of last year’s track team at Maricopa High School the group is not short of runners.

So far, Coach Duane Anderson said, 65 students are practicing for the track season and he anticipates that a couple more will join them after finishing other commitments. With such a large group Anderson said he is hoping team scores will increase from last season when there weren’t enough players to compete in every event.

Returning from last year’s team is Brittany Parks who finished first in the 100- and 200-meter dash at the 2A state championship tournament last year and third in the 400-meter dash.

Anderson hopes other members from last year’s team including Vince Davis, Du Tran, Chris Collett and Crystal Neal will also make strong contributions this year.

Right now the biggest problem the team faces is getting all 65 students and the coaches to the meets. The team has one bus that holds 56 people if filled to capacity. Anderson said the team is still looking into its transportation options.
Ultimately, Anderson said, he is looking forward to a great season.

“As coaches we are really excited this year,” he said.
