The Maricopa Gems Winterguard became the 2015 WGAZ Guard Scholastic Novice State Champions.

Under the leadership of first-year guard coach and Maricopa High School alumnus Taylor O'Sullivan, the Maricopa High School "Gems" Winterguard performed Saturday at the Winterguard Arizona Championships at Grand Canyon University Arena.

The guard earned first place in the Scholastic Novice Class and the Scholastic Novice Class Championship. The judges complimented the guard for great progress this season and noted improvements in equipment use, movement skills and characterization.

“This is a great accomplishment for our guard program and another great moment for MHS,” Ivan Pour, MHS music director and Fine Arts Department chair said. “We look forward to building on this success and continuing to build our guard curriculum in the coming years as the guard moves upward through the WGAZ classes.”
